Fusing dynamic media with real spaces means to reintroduce the limitations of time and space. The challenge is to design structures that integrate virtual media in space, seamlessly. This goes far beyond a video screen on a wall. It involves not only physical design but also the virtual and interactive functionalities that such installations offer. Conceptualising media in space involves the development of ideas that are able to link the real and the virtual world. This universal approach stimulates cross-disciplinary thinking and encourages students to develop creative methods and concepts that can be adapted to a wide range of areas, like immersive environments, kinetic sculptures, theatre performances projection mapping and interactive spaces.

Body Movement Deconstructed

A Study on human motion. Path lines, generated by capturing motions of an actor are printed into real three dimensional objects. The original motion of the actors is projected as light dots onto the lines.

Atmosphere

24 students explored the creative potential of immersive media installations. After becoming familiar with the technical foundations as well as the related design principles, the students created atmospheric moods based on three-dimensional compositions of colours, forms and movements for a 7 metre wide dome. A selection of 80 works was exhibited in at Prolight+Sound Shanghai/Messe Frankfurt GmbH (event organiser and sponsor). In order to present the 80 works interactively, I designed a graphical user interface for a multi-touch table that was placed in the centre of the dome (programming: Project Syntropy GmbH).

Glocken Spiel

As a game of Weiqi unfolds, the system tracks the location of the chess pieces and strikes one or more xylophone keys accordingly. Tuned Keys are struck with hammers driven by servo motors and Arduino. The X and Y axis of the interface represents time and pitch respectively. The intension of the machine was to explore how the tension of logic and ludic relates to (or translates) to the tension and logic involved in creating music.

Mirroring

Laser is the key element of the installation. The laser beam bounces between six rotatable mirrors. Each mirror is controlled via motors, 3D printed gears and Arduino. The programming controls the mirror rotation.

Dizygotic

A six words story is translated into a projection mapping project that explores the similitude of some English antonyms. I found a lot of antonyms that look similar, just like dizygotic twins, and I chose three groups of them, he and she, come and go, and glad and sad. Light propels on the pyramids structure, reflects, diffuses and shadows, revealing its geometry and material properties. (Sheng Yanan)

Record Player 2.0

Record player 2.0 is an interactive kinetic sculpture that emphasises the visual/physical dimension of sound. the sound of the installation is created from a molded plastik disc that is put on a turn table and read by a laser line. The uneven structure of the disc create visual displacement of the laser, which is captured by a camera and used to translate into sound. Thus, the user can listen to the height differences and simultaneously observes them on the plastic disc. The user can change the records, and adjust volume, speed and mode through a physical interface.

Reactive Grass

The initial idea was to emulate wave-alike movement that responds to the audience interaction, related to dialogue and approach between human and environment. The movement of the audience is captured by a camera and is related to the speed of the movement of the piece. The audience molds the shape generated by the superposition of the each line (grass).

Future Playground

Natural playing environments encouraging children to explore and discover the new, challenged by uncertain and unpredictable factors. A conventional playground compensates natural playing experience within an artificially restricted environment. Although this restrictions are related to reasonable safety issues, some of them are leading to strong limitations of playing experiences. A playground that supports physical and mental development should have a reasonable balance between free explorative playing and the prevention of possible risks. The integration of uncertainty and unexpected events as valuable qualities of an mentally and physically stimulating environment is one of the key elements of the future playground. Early childhood playing experiences has huge impact on individual development. Cognitive skills, creative thinking, and the ability to adapt intelligent to new situations is highly stimulated by enhanced playing environments.

Assuming that there is a seamless synergy between mind, body and world, the term embodiment can be applied to any physical representation of a system or an information, regardless if its biological or digital, real or virtual. Over the last decades, virtual media has become ubiquitous in our daily life, affecting the way we work, communicate, creating social relations and even play. To prepare next generations for a rapid changing media culture, new media has to be introduced pedagogically at an early stage of development. A pedagogically introduction implicates to create awareness of the underlying structure of digital media rather than just looking at the surface, which means its embodiment becomes an inherent component of the media, design and program.


Hollow Exploration Playground

Imagine we are inside an extremely enlargement of an ocarina. Holes in different shapes locate on different places on the structure. Inner forms cannot be seen from outside. Actions: Jump into holes and play, climb up from holes.
